Sourcing — Local Clay and Pit Fire Techniques: 10 days / 8000 sek

Sourcing — Local Clay and Pit Fire Techniques is an immersive, hands-on course focused on working with locally sourced materials and traditional low-tech firing methods. Taking place at Small House Studio, the course invites participants to engage deeply with the landscape, material origins, and elemental processes of ceramics.

Over the first part of the course, participants will explore local clay sources through guided excursions, including a visit to the brick factory in Ockelbo and the collection of clay from surrounding forests, lakes, and historical deposits in the area. Emphasis will be placed on identifying, processing, and testing wild clays, and understanding their unique qualities and limitations.

Throughout the course, participants will develop ceramic works using the sourced materials. The final three days will focus on pit-firing techniques and sawdust firing, offering practical experience with atmospheric firing, surface effects, and the unpredictability inherent in these processes.

In addition to studio work, each participant will prepare a short introductory presentation about their artistic practice. These talks will be held publicly in the Small House Gallery, encouraging dialogue and exchange between participants, local audiences, and the wider artistic community.

This course is ideal for artists and ceramic practitioners interested in material-led processes, sustainable practices, and expanding their relationship with clay from source to finished work.

Glass Fusing and Screen Printing Techniques, 10 days / 8000 sek

Glass Fusing and Screen Printing Techniques is a 10-day intensive course (2 weeks) dedicated to experimenting with image, color, and surface through fused glass and screen printing processes. Hosted at Small House Studio, the course focuses on the intersection of technical skill and material-driven investigation.

During the first part of the course, participants will work with glass fusing and screen printing techniques, beginning with experimentation on contours, layering, and shadowing. Through guided exercises, participants will explore how printed imagery interacts with glass depth, transparency, and light, and how fused layers affect perception and form.

As the course progresses, participants will experiment with different types of glass pigments and colors, focusing on how colors burn, shift, and transform during firing. Emphasis will be placed on testing, documentation, and understanding kiln behavior in relation to printed surfaces and fused compositions.

The final day of the course will be reserved for reflection and conclusions, including group discussions, review of results, and consideration of future applications of the techniques explored. Participants will have the opportunity to present their outcomes, share insights, and collectively reflect on both successes and unexpected results.

This course is intended for artists and practitioners interested in glass-based processes, printmaking, and experimental approaches to image and material.
